Schengen states share a 35×45mm visa format; passport rules inside the Schengen area can differ by country. Canada requires professionally taken, unaltered photos — see the Canada page before you shoot.

Can I take my own passport photo?
For a U.S. passport, yes — use even lighting, a plain white or off-white background and a neutral expression, and follow the head-size guide while shooting. Canada and some other countries require professionally taken photos; each country page on this site states its rule with the official source.
Why was my photo rejected?
The most common reasons: head size outside the required band, shadows on the background, glasses, a smile or an uneven face angle. Our pre-check flags these before you pay — but it is an automatic check, not an approval.
Is this government-approved?
No. Our compliance pre-check is automatic and unofficial — the issuing authority always makes the final decision. We cite the official rule on every country page so you can verify the current requirements yourself.
How do I print at home for $0.35?
Take our 4×6in print sheet to a CVS, Walmart or similar self-service kiosk. Choose a 4×6in print at actual size (no automatic scaling), then cut along the guides. The usable area of a 4×6in sheet is 4×5.7in, so exactly four 2×2in photos fit.
